Hey Jude!

7 Nov

If you are familiar with the Anglican prayer book Jude is one of those books you may know very well without realising it.  In the same way, you have probably sung part of Jude without perhaps realising it.  Jude is famous for its ‘doxology’ or hymn of praise which is said or sung often in Christian services:

“To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy—  to the only God our Saviour be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.”  (Jude 24-25)

Jude’s major preoccupation is with ‘keeping us from falling’.  He warns us that false teachers will wheedle their way into the church and our lives, seeking to lead us away from the one true Gospel as shared by the Apostles in the New Testament.  If we follow these people away from the truth he warns us of the danger of the ‘punishment of eternal fire’.  Instead, we must ‘contend for the faith’ and stay true to the Gospel.  However, it is in the final doxology that we receive the greatest encouragement.  It is God who is able to keep us from falling.  Whatever happens, if we trust in God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, nothing and no one can make us fall.  What an encouragement from a book that is only 25 verses long!
