Our Warranty

18 Nov

I have had reason to be thankful for warranties lately.  Several of our electrical appliances broke down seemingly all at once.  Usually I find when I then check the warranty it has expired sometime in the last month, but on this occasion they were all still covered by the warranty (one by just a day or two!).  So instead of having to pay for expensive repairs the repairs were done for free and with one of the appliances we received a brand new machine.

Why am I sharing this?  It reminded me that our warranty as Christians never expires. This is not because we are indestructible and free from sin.  On the contrary, even as we struggle and sometimes break down in sin, if we are in Christ our eternity is secure.  In John’s Gospel Jesus promised this to his sheep –

“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.”

In the same way, in Ephesians, we are reminded that the Holy Spirit is our seal or deposit “guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession”.  We don’t need to scramble around to see if our warranty is still valid.  If we trust in Christ, our eternity is sure and certain. Isn’t that the most wonderful news?
